"NEWCOMERS TO CANADA"

Durham Region has become a diverse, multi-cultural, multi-religious, and multi-linguistic community. Different ethno-cultural communities reside in all eight of its municipalities.

The need to provide support in language training, settlement services, supports to secure employment and other forms of assistance, to enable internationally educated workers to integrate their skills and utilize their potential in the labour force, has been well documented.

In a collective effort to address these issues, the very first "Networking Event in Durham for Internationally Trained Professionals, Immigrants and Newcomers to Canada" took place in Whitby on February 28th, 2003. An estimated 150 people attended this half-day event, which offered:
  • a tour of an exhibitor's "marketplace" and chance to meet local service providers and employers;

  • opportunities to learn new skills through a series of workshops and presentations led by "experts" in their field, such as presenting oneself effectively to employers, preparing a resume, interviewing tips and techniques, and using the Internet to conduct research and find employment;

  • opportunities to gain valuable information with regards to the assessment of international training and credentials, occupational and regulatory requirements to work in Canada, services available in Durham, and recent developments affecting "newcomers".
The Local Training Board led this initiative with great support from a number of community partners, who since last fall helped develop the concept and plan the event. Most of these partners had never before worked with the Local Board. They included the Social Development Council of Ajax-Pickering, World Education Services, the Access to Professions and Trades Unit of MTCU, Horn Ventures International, Durham Continuing Education, the Harmony Movement, and Durham Unemployed Help Centre.

Based on positive reaction from participants and organizers alike, the Local Training Board has committed to undertake a follow up partnership "event" for Internationally educated professionals and immigrants in 2003-2004.

If you would like any further information, or if you would like to participate in the planning of future activities for immigrants and "newcomers", give Rick Lea a call at the Local Training Board office, or email Rick at localtrainingboard@sympatico.ca.
