  • The Prusts acquired this 100 acre farm, zoned an industrial property, from the Strain family in 1997.
  • Certified as an organic producer and recognized by the horticultural trade as a premium quality brand, Pefferlaw, the only peat farm in Durham Region packaging consumer products, supplies a variety of garden and potting soils (including composted manures), peat products, and mineral (sand, deco stone) and organic mulches, primarily to independent retailers in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • They harvest all natural black earth (peat humus) and peat moss (fibre) from 22 acres of a 67 acre bog, using specially adapted snow grooming equipment and a unique corduroy road system.
  • Their production plant is computerized, utilizing state-of-the-art soil processing, fill and sealing, and palletizer equipment capable of handling up to 50 different products.
  • Operating year round, Pefferlaw employs an equivalent of 15 full-time staff, and employ up to 20 people during peak periods.
  • Research into biodegradeable plastics and bog to functional wetland restoration, which includes the transfer of soil and plants from a natural area to a harvested location, are both ongoing environmental projects for Pefferlaw.
Delivery and transportation costs account for approximately 20% of the "bag cost" of Pefferlaw's soil products.
